Essay #2 Arguing without prescribing

 Medical Marijuana: The Indecision Issue

Richard Nguyen

Many people have a lot of skepticism towards marijuana and its uses, whether it is for medical purposes or simply to get high. But mostly on impulse or the first train of thought, what many people have in mind at the very moment of hearing the word "marijuana" is that it’s an illegal drug that makes the smoker get high. It is common sense to dictate that marijuana simply makes people get high and have harmful effects on both the body and mind because it is also common knowledge. To be honest, that is what I have grown up to believe in. That is what I was taught defines marijuana, but there are others who argue that it is also beneficial to the studies of medicine as well. The main question that I want to ask, then, is this: "is medical marijuana actually beneficial to medical use, instead of just being a drug for many people to get high on?"
When marijuana was first acknowledged in the U.S. it was immediately illegalized and was seen as a drug by many citizens, and it also became an opportunity to make illegal money for drug dealers. These are the two main causes for all the states in the U.S. to illegalize it, and to automatically brand the substance as prohibited for all to stay away from. To this day, in the states in which marijuana is illegal, people have been smuggling and using marijuana just to get high or for pain relief. The issue here is that while medical marijuana smokers are smoking to gain the medical benefits, i.e. pain releif from chemotherapy, for their health issues, in some states, most doctors are still a little bit skeptical on how helpful the drug can be, so they don't endorse it or recommend it as much as regular medicine. Even though most doctors think that medical marijuana isn't helpful, there are still some doctors who think that medical marijuana is actually beneficial. In a quote, writer Sharon Kirkey says,  "But research into medicinal marijuana is undergoing a surge of interest, with more evidence emerging not only of its ability to ease human suffering, but also of its apparent safety.” (Kirkey, A4) This quote is a good example, by Sharon Kirkey, of how the medical field is still skeptical about the marijuana usage, even though it helps people beneficially for health reasons.
Yes, there is an interest of study into the usage of medical marijuana, which solves the problem of medical study of marijuana, but it still doesn't solve the problem of skepticism about the study and the uses for it. Mostly because of the common knowledge of what marijuana was originally used for as a drug, before scientists and doctors started to begin thinking of using it as medicine, and because of that doctors and other medical researchers were studying about the harmful effects of marijuana as a drug. Such as certain users or smokers will have different effects on the human brain. For example, young teens that smoke or use marijuana will show poor academic performance and might even get addicted to it. “But scientific research shows that there are risks, especially for teens. For those who use it regularly, it can lead to poor academic performance, or even addiction." ("The science of marijuana how THC affects the barin." 22)That is just one example of how many people discover about how marijuana can harm the human body. In other words marijuana just got stuck being studied about how harmful it is to people or the human body in general. While others started to have an opened mindedness for thinking that it can actually be beneficial to people.
The issue here is all about how people argue about their differences on the uses for marijuana. While one doctor or medical scientist is studying about the harmful effects of marijuana, the other is researching how beneficial it is to the human body medically. An example how medical researchers and doctors can contradict each other, is that they always find a new fact or issue about marijuana be to both beneficial and harmful to the body. While one doctor says "marijuana smoke won't damage the lungs of the human body." The other doctor says “marijuana smoke has harmful effects of smoking and greatly boosts respiratory problems." "Cannabis doesn't damage the lungs like tobacco smoke, which changes the small airways and causes long-term and permanent damage."("Cannabis is useful.”)"The disease, which is often caused by smoking, actually encompasses a few disorders, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. People with COPD often have difficulty breathing and shortness of breath, and experience increased coughing." (Carly Weeks. L4) I other words it is a way for both doctors and medical researchers to say that they are both half wrong all the time.
That mainly sums up how the medical study on marijuana works for doctors and medical researchers. To rephrase my point, doctors will always have an argument with each other, proving one person is right and the other is wrong; by discovering new material about marijuana and to disapprove each other's theorize about it. This causes an endless cycle between the two arguments to always discover new material about marijuana. But in my opinion, I cannot decide whether it is beneficial to human health or not because I cannot form an unbiased opinion. I have never smoked marijuana yet so I cannot say that I am able to form an honest opinion because I only know about marijuana through readings, and other people who have smoked it. But until I experience medical marijuana first hand, to fully understand the effects and benefits of it, I can finally have both sides of the argument to form a well-developed opinion of whether it is beneficial to human health or not.

Summarizing citation sources for essay #2

In the first citation or source is about a study in Canada about how smoking marijuana may increase health risks in patients to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is often caused by smoking, and has a some irregularities such as bronchitus and emphysema. Bronchitus is the infection to the bronchial tubes and is mostly caused by cigarette smoke, and emphysema is a disease in the lungs that is characterized by the air gaps or spaces in the lungs. These two disorders are just some of the added side effects to COPD when smoking marijuana or cigarettes, and they are one of the leading causes of death in Canada. The second source is about the study of medical marijuana, and that it can help with pain during chemotherapy for cancer patients. There are synthetic versions of the chemical compund THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) that is found medical marjiuana, or mainly marijuana in general, available for medical prescription use for patients. Although some patients who take the medications still get high sometimes but they are allowed to reduce or custoize the dosage, so they wont get high.

Essay #1

Information Essay #1

Growing up I gathered information in as many ways as there are many subjects or topics to look up and study about. Of course starting from my childhood I started getting information from my parents because they are always one’s first teachers in one's lifetime. Unfortunately my dad wasn't an informative teacher because he would always lie and joke around me if I wanted to learn about something. Such as the time I asked him "how the freezer in our refrigerator makes ice?" He said, and I quote "there are little ice gremlins in the freezer that blow on water to make it cold to turn it into ice." Unfortunately being the young naive person that I was, at the age of 5, I believed him which led me to believe most of his other lies. Another lie or joke he told me was that the A/C in our car works in the same way except there were goblins instead of gremlins. Fortunately as I got older, I got smarter and started to ignore my dad's knowledge; which is a bit of a stretch calling my dad's information knowledge. My mother told me how things really worked in the freezer and the A/C system in our car, and that’s where my starting point is to properly gain knowledge and information about the world.
Thankfully for my mother, being the caring person that she is, she properly educated on how things should work around the house and in real life. Until, to the point where I asked way too many questions, she started hiring tutors for me to get educated outside of school. I have had at least twenty five or more tutors between elementary school and high school freshman year. Through the studies of my education, in school and through my tutoring, I've noticed that I started to surpass my classmates’ academically. Most of my time was spent studying or doing unneeded exercises that my tutors forced upon me to do. It started to even affect my mother to think that my many studies weren’t enough for my education. So she had the bright idea to save money, and become my own tutor; I couldn't believe the stress that woman affected upon me. Giving me morning warm-up practices to do for math before I even get a chance to eat breakfast, and giving me more when I got home. Although the cause of all this stress and work originated from my younger days when I asked so many questions and my mother couldn't resist getting them answered for me. That was the cause but the effect of that was me getting stressed out and getting tired too easily. So I started to slack off a lot, and not care about my studies anymore.
When I slacked off I got to hang with my friends more and started to gain more information through them. Getting information through my friends is a lot more interesting and entertaining because I get to learn from many different viewpoints, and I can make a neutral opinion. One example of how I remained neutral in a conversation was when my friends were talking about politics, and they were debating about which party is better than the other. They asked me the question “Hey Richard. Are you a democrat or a republican?" I said "neither” because I needed to remain neutral to form a balanced opinion on the conversation, nor was I going to choose a side with either person. Then they asked me "why?" My response was "Because I'm pretty smart and I don't enjoy being half wrong all the freaking time."
That's just one of my point of views that I’ve developed through gaining information from my friends. Although most of the time, my friend’s information that I get from them are mostly rumors and interesting events that happen in school. Such as, he says he’s going to get into a fight with him after class or she says she will pull a prank on that girl over there. As the saying goes, Rumors spread like wild fires and can’t be controlled when it gets too out of hand. In conclusion, growing up I try to get as much information as I can from any sources as I can because there is a never ending road to gaining knowledge.
Now if I want to start an essay about a particular topic to write about for school such as medical marijuana for example, then I need to start by finding a good database to get good sources for information. Even if I find good sources to get information, I probably won't have all of the information that I need to have to write about my medical marijuana essay. But some good sources for medical marijuana must have facts about marijuana, and point of view of someone who has experianced medical marijuana.
Such as the source thats titled "Mothering Medical marijuana" where there is not only  information about medical, but also a viewpoint on it as well. Also there is someone who has used and experienced medical marijuana. There is a passage who gain information about one use for medical marijuana "she knew some women who smoked marijuana for morning sickness, and it really helped them." (Hildebrandt, Erin. "Medical Marijuana." Mothering. May/June 2004: 52-61. SIRS Issues Researcher. Web. 26 Jan 2012.) This is one example of how medical marijuana is used, and it also shows it through someone who has experianced it. Another good source for information about marijuana is a source that mainly focuses on health specifcally.
The source title "weeding out the hype" is a good example of that because it debunks the myths and facts about marijuana. It tells that the main ingrediant in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) that makes people get high from smoking marijuana.  "The chemical THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the ingredient that typically makes a marijuana user high, an experience that may include changes in mood, awareness, and outlook." ("Marijuana: Weeding Out the Hype!." Marijuana: Weeding Out the Hype.) This source is a good example of an up to date source where it has the latest facts and myths about marijuana, and is kept up to date. So in conclusion, a good source for information has to be up to date, with facts, and point of views to form a honest opinion.

#Barnoyeng111 opposing and For marijuana

Summary Oppose:
Marijuana is often looked at as something that is just to get a person high or simply as a mind altering drug. It looks often dried up and mostly resmbles like oregano or other dried herbs. Mostly marijuana is mainly used to get high for users and that it has harmful affects on the body and the brain. Such as, for the brain, the persons judgment system wil be affected and will not care about the coices that they make. In other words its like alcohol, when the person gets drunk, their decision making or choices in the brain get shut down and will start to make bad choices. But with marijuana the THC  (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the main ingrediant that makes people high) changes the information in the brain get processed and will damage the person's ability to learn and memorize. As for the body, marijuana can slow the movement or the reactions of the body down, and dilated pupils. Also some of these affects on the body and the brain may be long-term affects as well. That is why marijuana is bad for the body and is illegal.

Summary For:
When people hear the word marijuana people immediatley think its a drug that is harmful and should be avoided at all cause. But there are studies that show there are some benefits for health with medical marijuana. Such as some women have smoked medical marijuana for morning sickness, and some smoked to help with cancer in chemotherapy. Many doctors are afraid the use of medical marijuana becasue there is such a high opposition for the use of it. But about 94 percent of patients in a study in Colorado "say they use medical marijuana for severe pain; muscle spasms account for the second-most reported condition at 21 percent. Other conditions include cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, seizures and severe nausea. Patients can report more than one condition." Even this isn't enough to legalize medical marijuana becase there are always doubts about the medical benefits of medical marijuana, while so many people have used it so many times for their own health issues. Which is why medical marijuana should be legalized for further study to help others beneficially for medical use.

#TSISmyopinion1 Facebook vs. Twitter

#Barnoyeng111 #TSISmyopinion1 Some people in this class (Eng111) say that Twitter is easier and better than Facebook. Mostly because it is simpler and that many people are using Twitter more than Faccebook. However, I am new to twitter and I think that it is pretty complicated to use than Facebook. When I was on Facebook it was pretty easy for me to set things up right away, and add my friends. While on facebook you have to use hash tags and an @ sign if you want to find or reply to people. Although Since I'm still fairly new to twitter I haven't given it my unbiased opinion or review. So I'll give a chance and try to figure it out some more to give a honset rating.

what to wirte about in 1st essay

Well there were 2 questions to answer in this essay. So to answer the 1st question (where have you gotten your information and why?) My answer is that, I've gotten most of my information through the news and websites that have info on things I need to gather random information on. Sometimes if I need a biased viewpoint, I would go to my friends and sometimes I would lure them into a steamy debate about a subject or a particular topic. So I can gather information and remain neutral to form an honest, and unbiased viewpoint. One example of how I remained nuetral in a conversation was when my friends were talking about politics, and were debating about which party is better than the other. They asked me the question " Hey Richard. Are you a democrat or a republican?" I said "neither" because I needed to remain neutral to form a balanced opinion on the conversation, and I wasn't going to choose a side with either person. When they asked me "why?" My response was "Because I'm kinda smart and I don't enjoy being half wrong all the freaking time."
